Conservancy
Our private conservancy is 35,000 acres, adjoining the Masai Mara National Reserve and acts as a buffer zone to the Reserve. It consists of varying habitats from Black Acacia woodland areas to large wetland areas. The conservancy has a high density of elephants, buffalo, and two separate prides of lions that have set up residency. Behind the lodge is a sandstone escarpment where we often see leopard, a pack of African wild dogs and the very rare Verreaux’s eagle.
The Lodge is located in a suitable location as it is able to offer the following:
- Fantastic game viewing opportunities
- Immediate access to the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve (Home of The Annual Great Wildebeest Migration)
- Private waterhole and saltlick
- Views of the stunning variety of African wildlife and landscape
The incredible spectacle of the Great Wildebeest Migration, also referred to as one of the “Seven Natural Wonders of the World” takes place from July to October. During that time over two million wildebeest and zebra migrate from the Serengeti National Park to the greener pastures of the Masai Mara. Spirit of the Masai Mara offers you the opportunity to join us and witness this truly breathtaking event.
In addition to that, the Spirit of the Masai Mara allows one to take breathtaking nature walks as you feel, smell, hear and touch the wild Africa on nature walks with our silver certified Masai guides from the local community

ACTIVITIES
Game Drives
For the early birds – Day game drives
Enjoy the fresh morning breeze, the break of dawn and the bush coming to life in the early morning hours of the day. Our staff will give you a wake-up call at your discretion while hot coffee and tea is already brewing. You can return to the lodge for a breakfast after your morning safari, or you can continue exploring the Masai Mara National Reserve and the Siana Conservancy with bush breakfast and picnic lunch to have a full day in the park.
The Siana Conservancy allows our guests to view the stunning wildlife without interference from other vehicles.
Trained local guides
Our safari guides are well trained and certified by the Kenya Wildlife Service. They are passionate about their culture and wildlife and will happily share their vast knowledge with you.
In addition to our in-house guides, Spirit of the Masai Mara offers you the opportunity to upgrade your safari package by selecting from our list of exclusive freelance safari guides. These experienced individuals distinguish themselves through their long-standing experience and knowledge of the wildlife in the Masai Mara.
We are happy to assist you in tailoring your game drives and guides according to your wishes and needs.
For the nocturnal safari guest – night game drives
As night falls, the stars light up brightly in the velvety blue darkness of the Masai Mara and a spectacular nocturnal theatre begins. It is the hour of the big cat predators who get ready to hunt but also of rare nocturnal animals such as aardvarks, honey badgers and genets. The experience of a night game drive is one that cannot be missed – the smells are stronger, the sounds are reduced to the occasional calls and roars of the predators and even the most frequently seen animals take on another appearance in the light of the moon and stars.
Your nocturnal adventure can be booked upon arrival at our reception.
Hot Air Ballooning
For the lightheaded traveller – hot air balloon safaris
Early morning is the ideal time to see wild animals on the plains. Experience the crisp fresh air of the Masai Mara Game Reserve, silently floating above in a hot air balloon. The balloon lifts off at dawn after coffee and a flight briefing. The one hour flight will give you a birds eye view of the best East Africa has to offer. After your champagne breakfast, you will enjoy a game drive back to the lodge.
Balloon safaris include landing fees and a champagne breakfast upon landing. Prices range from 450 to 550 USD per person.
Due to high demands during the high season from June to September, please be advised to book your balloon safari prior to your arrival. During mid and low season, balloon safaris can be booked via our reception desk upon your arrival in the Masai Mara.
Walking Safaris & Bird Viewing
For the adventurer – bush walks and hiking tours
Although bush walks and hiking tours in the Masai Mara Game Reserve are strictly prohibited, we offer our guests the exciting adventure of a walking safari in the Siana Conservancy. Feel, smell, hear and touch wild Africa. Our specially trained guides will ensure your safety at all times while explaining to you the traditional medicinal uses of different shrubs and trees as well as the tracks and spoors of the animals in the Siana Conservancy.
The smaller creatures such as dung beetles, chameleons and small gazelles are the true stars of our walking safaris. You will have time to appreciate the intricacies of this diverse eco system that is a fundamental part of the Masai Mara.
Spirit of the Masai, working in partnership with Secret Compass (https://secretcompass.com/ ) offers bespoke extended walking safaris through the Greater Mara ecosystem. Typically, these involve groups of 10-12 guests on a 5 day walking safari. Vehicle support is used to transport tents, water, food and luggage, leaving our visitors unburdened to enjoy the scenery. For more information please contact info@spiritofthemasaimara.com
Bird viewing
More than 570 bird species can be found in the Masai Mara, making it the perfect place for ornithologists to see a rare bateleur or saddle-billed stork. For real twitchers, we suggest you take advantage of the services of Ohad, one of our freelance guides, an expert with an in-depth knowledge and vast experience of the birds of East Africa. Special care has been taken with the vegetation surrounding the lodge to encourage a wide variety of bird species that can be viewed from your suites.
