The Serena Beach Hotel Resort & Spa (SBRS) Turtle Conservation Project was started in 1993 with the establishment of a turtle nest protection program where turtle eggs from insecure nest sites in the marine habitats around the Shanzu Bay, Mtwapa, Kikambala, and Kenamai beaches are collected and brought to SBRS for protection and hatching.

The program was found necessary as marine ecological reports indicated that turtles faced extinction within the next 50 years and this necessitated the CITES to list the Sea Turtles that SBRS conserve (Green, Olive Ridley, and Hawksbill Turtles) as critically endangered.

Since the inception of the project by SBRS over two decades ago. As of 2018, it was at 58,017, the Year 2019 was at 3,513 and the Year 2020 was at 401. This brings it to a total of 61,931 Hatchlings as of 2020, 560 nests were reported and secured. 85% of hatchlings have been released into the Indian Ocean.

Nest losses due to tidal flooding, predators, and human activities are the primary threats to the nesting success of Sea Turtles around SBRS.
