Sharing Moments Of The WRC Safari Rally Kenya 2022
The Safari Rally was first held in 1953 to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II of England whose father died in 1952 while she was on holiday in Kenya. The event was removed from the FIA World Rally Championship – WRC in 2002 but made a historic comeback and returned in 2021 after a 19-year absence. H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta took a personal initiative to bring back this iconic event which was watched globally by a record 78 million people in 150 countries.
This year’s Safari Rally event took place from Thursday 23rd June 2022 to Sunday 26th June 2022 in Nakuru County and was managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service Training Institute (KWSTI) where the Service Park was located. The Safari rally covered a distance of 1222 KM, however, the competitive distance covered amounts to 355 km.
The event was divided into four legs. On Thursday, outside the KICC where H.E the President Uhuru Kenyatta flagged off the first few cars from midday. Competitors headed to Kasarani Stadium for the first leg where drivers were racing side by side in a 4km circuit and later proceeded to drive to Naivasha at the Wildlife Research and Training Centre Service Park for overnight parking. Day Two was 168 KM long of which 62 KM was the competitive distance. Drivers drove twice through Loldia, Geothermal (a brand-new stage that climbs over craggy rock-lined hills), and Kedong stages. Day three constituted a distance of 202 KM where 75 KM was the competitive distance. Drivers drove twice through Soysambu, Elementaita and Sleeping Warrior.
The Safari Rally concluded on Sunday 26th June 2022 in the Oserian, Naivasha and Hell’s Gate repeated twice. Total distance was 275 KM long of which 83 KM was the competitive distance.
