Sally Karago Collections – The Story
Sally Karago is a renowned Kenyan fashion designer that has stirred the imagination of the Kenyan fashion industry since her début in 1993 at the Smirnoff Awards. Sally Karago’s interest in fashion began at the tender age of twelve. Sally loved to stitch dresses for her dolls and insisted on coordinating clothing for her parents and sisters.
On completion of high school, Sally joined a local college to pursue her passion for design after persuading her late father to do so against his better judgment. In the eighties a career in fashion was unheard of. She graduated with a Diploma (distinction) in Pattern Drafting and Clothing Construction. Restless and seeking further knowledge, Sally enrolled at the American College in London for further studies. After four years at the college, she was awarded with a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion and Merchandising.
Returning home to Kenya in 1993, Sally soon realized that fashion was not recognized in Kenya as a professional career to embark on but never the less; she was determined to succeed / make her mark as a fashion designer.
Sally registered Mcensal Ltd in 1994, a workshop that was to produce “made to measure” garments for private and corporate clients. Mcensal’s motto is to
“Satisfy the customer with garments that are comfortable, stylish and suitable for all seasons.”
Mcensal prides its self for creativity, great finishing, good fitting and unique fabrics. These fabrics are sourced locally and internationally from suppliers in West Africa, Europe, China, Dubai and Bangkok.
Over time, Sally recognized a niche in the market for a fashion college after observing that there were many creative’s, young and old, that were looking for a college to cultivate their talents in fashion. Mcensal School of Fashion Design was established in 2009 to offer a three year Higher National Diploma (HND) in fashion which is based on the Edexcel BTEC curriculum and also a one year Diploma.
Sally’s dream is to have a lasting impact in the industry and equip the next generation of fashion designers to compete on an international stage has been realized. So far, twenty four students from the school have completed the three year HND programmer and another twenty four students from the one year diploma programmer. Many of the Alumni of the college are in the market place positioning themselves as entrepreneurs, adding value and contributing to the growth of the Kenyan fashion industry.
In 2017, the “Made in Kenya” initiative inspired Sally to open women’s ready-to-wear retail shops. The Sally Karago Collections is a notable fashion label in Kenya, whose signature look is casual elegance / chic. With a growing reputation in the market, a new boutique has been opened Off Ngong Road, Kindaruma Road, Adalyn Flats next to be Baptist Church. In 2018, Sally rebranded her SK Collection to Sally Karago Collections to make her name recognizable.
After more than twenty-five years in the market, Sally’s ultimate dream is to open more ready to wear retail outlets across the fashion centers of the world.
