I had never been to Kirinyaga county beyond Nairobi Karatina highway and most of the things I knew were collected from the media.
When my friend Clement invited us for a village experiential tour I was very excited. We choose to drive ourselves so that we can make as many detours as possible.
This county is famous for its agricultural produces and politics equally; I was here to explore its attractions and cultural experiences. We diverted on the right at sagana junction and took the route to kagio market. It took us an hour or so to get to kerugoya Town where our host was waiting for us.
We did a site visit of Roswam Hotel perhaps the best hotel in Kirinyaga county.
Afterwards we proceeded to the bridge of God [Daraca ya ngai], I was curious to know why such a name? The locals told us that since it’s a natural walk path over a river they believed gods used it to cross the other side. They also mentioned that anyone who has ever tried to destroy this bridge or mine stones underneath it, die mysteriously and any broken stone is replaced like magic… you may ask if we did try to see if it’s true, would you? Haha…
Under the bridge is a nice open cave, a seasonal river passing by to join the main Thiba river and a beautiful peaceful , private space one can have a picnic or just hung out with thyself. The descend is sloppy and shoes with good grip are highly recommended.
Our next stop was Thiba falls, a breathtaking triplet fall to a shallow pool where locals and visitors equally swim. The place is not manned so if you wish to have a swim use a local to guide you and just in-case, they would be the best to save you and again it’s a good way to contribute to the local economy.
We also visited and swam in other falls around before retiring in our hosts home in Kibiringo village at the border of Mt. Kenya forest.
Kiamunye village is quite cold and one needs to carry warm clothing’s especially in the morning we had to take our tea quickly before it went cold. We started our day by visiting local farms especially the tea farms which is one source of income in this area our host has also planted purple tea a rare tea variety grown in the Mt. Kenya region, derived from a new crossbred variety of the common tea leaf, Camellia synesis, from which black, white, and green teas are derived.
This new variety of the classic tea plant was only recently developed and is exclusive to Kenya and has more antioxidants than any variety.
As we exited Kabiringo village we passed by castle forest lodge falls on Kamweti route to Mt.Kenya. The trail leads you on old elephant pathways through dense rain and bamboo thickets of Mt. Kenya.
The view of Southern Mt.Kenya from this side is breathtaking it was just the goodbye we needed.
Next time when you are in Kirinyaga county stop by and enjoy its sigts and sound . Thank you Clement Mwai for this tour.
