Founder of Sally Karago Collections Narrates Inspiration Behind the Turkana Collection
“I have always had a keen eye for fashion. My dad is the first person who noticed. He would let me pick out items for him and my siblings, every time we went shopping ahead of the Christmas season,” Sally the founder of Sally Karago Collections recalls with a fond chuckle.
Sally Karago is the first Kenyan Fashion Designer to showcase an entirely African collection, known as the Turkana Collection about the Turkana Boy . The Turkana Collection was first shown at The Kenya House during the Olympics 2012 in London.
In 2014, I showcased at the African Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York.
Subsequently, She then added the new second capsule collection. It showcased at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Ghana.
This collection is an inspiration by the Turkana people. For example, shapes of their clothing, culture influence and the attire styles from the children, men, women and adornments which form the silhouettes, fabric and color choice.
All adornments were a cross reference of the women traditional adornments. The bead works were made from the ethnic fabrics to add multi colors to the collection.
In summary, this collection is a master piece of research that has brought a traditional lifestyle to modern wear. It showcased for the very first time on an international catwalk showcasing the beauty of the Turkana people, found in Kenya.
