COPPER at THE SOCIAL HOUSE
Copper is The Social House’s new French-inspired grill. It’s so named as not only is copper the oldest metal used by man, it’s strongly associated with cooking as it is a great conductor of heat: French cooking in particular. Oh, and there also happens to be an entire wall in the restaurant clad in copper sheets!
Chefs Anibal Torres and Philip Otwabe have shaped an eclectic menu centred on French flavours, but occasionally taking them in new and uncharted directions. Classic French dishes dominate: bacon, cheese and mushroom, steak frites (three steak options served with French Fries), moules mariniere (mussels in a white wine sauce), lobster thermidor and tarte aux pommes (apple tart). But you’ll also find splashes other worldly flavours to keep the taste buds intrigued. The menu will also evolve over seasons, depending on what’s best from the sea, the rivers and the farm. So, in short, expect the unexpected!
The interiors are sultry and seductive, but the quirkiness associated with the rest of The Social House is still subtly present, and the service style is so refreshingly free of pomp and formality. This is definitely imaginative, high quality, upscale dining, but any notion of ‘Fine Dining’, with white table cloths, black and white uniforms and ‘sirs’ and ‘madams’ is happily missing. It exudes an atmosphere that puts you entirely at ease: a great way to remove some of the stresses associated with the current climate. French cuisine is surprisingly in short supply in Nairobi and in Copper The Social House has found a modern, multi-influenced and informal way of delivering its own little slice of France. Bravo!
