The Creole Culture In Seychelles
Seychelles is home to a unique Creole Culture. Creole is a word used in Seychelles to refer to those native to the country of whichever ancestry. The majority of people living in Seychelles are Creole. They are mostly of African and Malagasy origin. However, the Creole people today also include people of mixed African, Malagasy, Indian, Chinese, French and British origins. Seychellois Creoles are proud of their African/Malagasy heritage and have set up a Creole institute in Mahé to help promote and to help others understand their culture.
Unlike in the past where most Seychellois used to believe in spirits and sorcery nowadays almost all the inhabitants of Seychelles are Christians. More than 90 percent are Roman Catholic. Sunday masses are well attended. Religious holidays are celebrated as religious and social events. Like other Africans, many Seychellois Christians still follow traditional religious practices.
One thing visitors must try is Creole food. The Seychellois Creole cuisine combines a wide variety of cooking styles, including English, French, Chinese, and Indian. Creole cooking is rich, hot, and spicy. It blends fruit, fish, fresh vegetables, and spices. It’s made from fresh local ingredients and has been influenced by India, Asia and France. For something cheap and cheerful in Beau Vallon, there’s a Creole food market every Wednesday. The roadside stalls and takeaways you see sell authentic dishes, too – grilled fish and coconut curry with chicken or fish or octopus or salted fish. Ask a local for advice on which ones are the best.
October is a good time to visit Seychelles as that is when the annual Festival Kreol is held. There are a lot of activities going on, not just on Mahe but on some of the smaller islands as well. The program includes music concerts, traditional games, a creole bazaar and poetry readings, culminating in a huge parade of colourful floats reflecting island life. Music has always played an important role in the Creole culture. Hence, proper Creole bands play at the opening ceremony and throughout the festival itself.
