My First Time Book Review

Renowned Kenyan journalist Janet Mbugua, is the author of the book, “My First Time”. She was inspired to write the book after her struggle with Endometriosis. Her main objective for writing the book was to try and tackle the stigma associated with menstruation.Through her book, Janet raises awareness about painful and prolonged menses. The book features top Kenyan celebrities like Adelle Onyango, Caroline Mutuko, Sharon Mundia, Mercy Masika, Pinky Ghelani and many others, who give an account of their first time having periods.

“My First Time” brings together 50 voices who narrate their stories on this topic. These stories, once internalized, have the potential to improve the lives of millions, not only in Kenya but around the world, in putting an end to period poverty. The book was published by Longhorn Publishers. The book is for every girl, mother, son, father, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, cousin, teacher, pastor, and Imam. 10 per cent of the proceeds from the book sales will go to providing innovative solutions for access and information and solutions to addressing period poverty, with the Menstrual Hygiene Management center being one of them. Funds raised from the book will play a role in creating solutions to addressing period poverty and period misinformation.

“My First Time” is available at all Text Book Centre stores in Nairobi. The book is retailing at KES 1,750 per copy.
