Awaken the Spirit Within – The Spirit of the Masai Mara
Many a traveller will tell you, that there are few places on earth that evoke an almost innate feeling, of adventure, of belonging, of oneness with the earth, and that is the magical Masai Mara. Having been in the travel industry for more than 30+ years in East Africa, gives you a firm grasp of what a modern luxury travellers’ wants and needs are. But to almost seamlessly blend these in, with one of the toughest unforgiving terrains in the world’s most sought-after safari destination, is a feat only a few properties have truly achieved. When it comes to combining all the comforts of a 5-star boutique property, and all the trimmings of an epic African adventure, the Spirit of the Masai Mara is indeed a lodge like no other.
Onto one of our many weekend excursions to explore the unique and beautiful in our country, this particular weekend drew us to the beguiling 56,000 acre Private Siana Game Conservancy in the Masai Mara complete with uninhibited game drives in unrestrictive vehicles (yep 4×4 open-air safari vehicles that really have no windows), where the heightened excitement of a wildlife viewing, or a kill for that matter, is an exhilarating thrill that is almost second to none. A quick early-morning 30 minute flight from Kenya’s capital saw us arrive in vigor straight onto the closest airstrip where our personal safari guides picked us up, and what ensued was a mini game drive which already bore fruits, putting on showcase Kenya’s vivid landscapes and its ever-bountiful wildlife.
A Warm Welcome & Briefing By The Team
As our vehicle brushed against the bush branches that crept into the hilly pathway up to the lodge, and we made it past the almost insignificant front barrier, it became increasingly evident that the property we were staying at was completely unfenced. Infact all that was going to stand between us and the resident but extremely elusive leopards that were often known to frequent near the lodge on weekends, were the smartly shuka-dressed Masai guards that formed an imaginary wall around the property.
We were welcomed with a jovial meet & greet by the lodge manager himself, and a few of the senior members of staff on duty, for an introduction to the property, its features & amenities, and the long-awaited suites we’ve heard so much about.
Our Accommodation
As you step into your anything but humble abode, especially when you’re out in the middle of nowhere surrounded by the wilderness of the African savannahs, you’re almost blown away with breathtaking panoramic views through your rooms’ glass vistas, which you can see right through as soon as you open the front door – in what can only be best described as your personal boudoir or sitting area.
This room is especially ideal when travelling with children where they might need a little more space, or a great way to start or end your day with a refreshing cuppa or abit of bubbly to get you in a great mood for things to come.
Uniquely blending modern design concepts with traditional building materials, the teams at the Spirit of the Masai Mara have been able to impeccably capture the true spirit of the Mara as it were, from the comfort of your suite.
Wine & Dine at The Spirit of The Mara
When it comes to gastronomy, the kitchen teams at the spirit aim to take you on a culinary journey using only the finest and freshest meats, fish, poultry & produce from the top farms throughout Kenya, and even have their very own organic farm on the property where they grow their own veggies. All this is complemented with a superb selection of the finest hand-picked wines, cocktails, mocktails, freshly squeezed juices and much more to whet your appetite.
The service staff at the lodge cater to your every whim, and also offer a series of different ambiances to dine in. One of the awe-inspiring has got to be the early morning breakfasts (with eggs just the way you like them) or charming evening dinners by the pool. However our favourites have got to be the packed lunches you can enjoy out whilst on your game drives, or the epic sundowners in secret spots throughout the park or game reserve. Enjoy!
