My mum is my best friend! I am learning to fall in love with her all over again. After her stroke I feel that I am mourning a large part of her. It’s something called ambiguous grief. She’s a very strong person inside, her resilience shines though consistently. I wonder what she’s made of sometimes. I am afraid of having my heart broken again, getting to know the new her and then something else going wrong. But we are not in control, the space we should act from is always love as opposed to fear. I do miss her but she’s right here, it’s a constant battle. One day I hope I will understand it all. Today I celebrate my mother, for who she was, how she brought me up and who she continues to show up as, despite what life has thrown her way.

First of all my dear birth mother who became a widow at the tender age of 25 and brought up my brother and myself single handedly. Being an age of two and my brother only three months old,the sacrifices and challenges you endured silently -you stayed hungry sometimes but fed us. You not only had to be a mother as well as a father to us. Today, we are, because of you mum. What do I tell you about my second mother who was non other then my mother in law. The first time when we met although I was so nervous you embraced me into your arms and made me so comfortable. We faced a few challenges to get adjusted with each other but the great part was we both worked towards making this mother daughter relationship work without judging each other. You made me feel special, beautiful and always encouraged me to be independent and confident. I remember you were so overjoyed when I passed my driving test and your first reaction was, “now you can take me shopping” and that we did.
You gave me confidence, and encouraged me to be myself, you were not only my mum but also my best friend. You had an amazing sense of humor, clever, witty, sharp and we would laugh, argue and cry together. You were always protective, taking care of the family you were a true matriarch and it takes a lot to keep the peace, love and unity amongst us. You made sure we would have our regular Sunday family barbecues. It was super fun! Although you faced so many challenges no matter what you always had a beautiful smile on your face.
The last six months we spent together driving you to the doctors, going to do our hair and nails, our heart to heart conversations were so precious. When you passed on a piece of me died with you. I know you are with dad are at peace and always blessing us. Today, I celebrate you. I was truly blessed to have you as my mum. Happy Mothers Day
