It’s Always Experiential
Looking to escape the humdrum and adventure to somewhere new and extraordinary? Well, you don’t need to wait until the last third of the year. The Masai Mara is equally as remarkable in the off-season as it is in the high season. We actually refer to our off-season as our ‘secret season’. There’s a seasonality perception surrounding travelling to the Masai Mara and travelling in general.
Here though, there is boundless beauty between January and July. Sights and experiences worthy of even the wildest, most magical dreams. Sure, the high season is associated with the great migration, but the secret season has just as much wildlife including the Big Five.
The Secret Season
A visit to the Masai Mara during the secret is free from the masses of people that usually visit here during the migration and it offers spectacular wildlife encounters. For eight months of the year, excluding July, August, September and October, the Masai Mara is relatively quiet but just as beautiful.
However sacred, the Masai Mara is not just about the wildebeest migration. April, May and June are some of the best months of the year to visit – with incredible resident big cats, particularly Lion and Cheetah and other year-round plains game regularly sighted. There is an abundance of wildlife here throughout the year, with the season offering deep green landscapes and moody skies. It has its own allure about it which cannot be experienced or felt during the high season.
Another important factor is that during the off season, you can take advantage of our exclusive March-June specials and deal packages, which means you may just be able to stay for longer if you so choose.
Our Fascinating Wildlife
Envision yourself on a game drive in a cool and exquisite riverine forest filled with bird song and butterflies while hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes and plains game are ever-present.
Now, imagine yourself on a day trip to the Musiara Marsh and Paradise Plains which are both famous game viewing grounds featured in the BBC’s Big Cat Diaries and Disney’s African Cats series. You can’t buy this sort of thing, well, technically you can, but you catch our drift.
The Mara Engai Lodge and our surroundings are known for superb cat sightings with leopards, cheetahs and lions plentiful while other exciting creatures you may recognise include spotted hyena, serval, aardwolf, side-striped and golden jackal.
Furthermore, our gorgeous game reserve also offers frequent sightings of elephant, buffalo, giraffe and black rhino.
